Curriculum Assistance

Wake up to Waste has developed several resources / activities which will assist in the integration of waste management in to your teaching.

These activities are interactive, practical and enjoyable. By planning, doing and reviewing activities your pupils will be encouraged to develop good thinking habits and independent learning. We have separated the activities into waste streams:

Each activity may be adapted to suit the ability/interests of your pupils.

Pupil Involvement

Waste Education helps pupils to relate their learning to their everyday life both at school and at home.

It can empower pupils by getting them to make suggestions about ways in which school waste can be minimised and managed. Pupils can become involved in the management of their school and its buildings linking with the Eco-school programme.

Taking action on waste can be an excellent starting point or project for a school/pupil council.

Involving the Whole School

Taking effective action on waste can involve pupils, teachers, school managers and caretakers working together across different year groups, departments and areas of the school.

Tackling waste prevention and management within your school is a good starting point for the implementation of an Environmental Management System (EMS). Schools can go on to look at their use of water and energy, the design of their school buildings and the entire way in which their school is managed.

Beyond the School Gate

Waste Education can be an excellent way of linking home and school. For example your school could become involved in a community environmental issue eg litter, graffiti, recycling. This interaction could lead to projects with local businesses and community groups, Local Councils and NGOs. In this way the profile of the school in the wider community can be enhanced.
