Waste as a Discussion TopicFirst you may wish to ask your pupils to define, ‘what is waste?’ Here is one possible definition. Everyday we use things up or they get broken, dirty or outgrown and we throw them away. Leftover food, baked bean tins, clothes, toys can all become waste…..if we let them!! Waste comes from households, schools, businesses and agriculture. In Northern Ireland (NI) your Local Council and the Environment and Heritage Service (EHS) of the Department of the Environment (DOE) are responsible for making sure people and organisations manage waste properly. In NI we have a Waste Management Strategy which aims to make better use of resources, reduce waste and to manage the waste we produce. |
