General Waste
Rubbish Review
Look at the way waste is currently dealt with in your school.
- What kind of bins are there?
- Where
are they positioned?
- Are there any recycling bins in school? If
so, how many are there, where
are they and what materials can be put in them?
Carry
out a survey to record how much recyclable rubbish is created in your class each day.
For example:
- Is there rubbish after morning break or at lunchtime
- What about waste paper in your classroom
- Does this just go into the classroom bins?
- Are all these items placed in recycling bins? If not, is there a reason
for this?
Record your findings in a Table like the
one below. You may also wish to record the information in a Graph.

Discuss what you found out about the management of waste in your school.
You may wish to:
- start a recycling programme if one does not already exist or
to improve an existing one and make sure everyone in school knows about it whether they are pupils,
staff or visitors to the school
- form a school recycling committee
to meet regularly to discuss how the recycling
programme is going, to make any changes that may be necessary and to discuss any new ideas people
may have
