Textile Waste
Activity – Build a Scarecrow
You will need
- 2 strong pieces of wood such as old broom handles(1 longer than
the other)
- Garden twine or old string
- Balloon
- Old clothes
- Old newspapers
- Flour and water to make the papier mache
What
to Do
- Tie the 2 sticks together with the shorter one tied across the
longer one about ¾ way up the longer stick
- Blow up the balloon and draw a scary face on it.
- Mix together the flour and water to make a paste, tear up the old newspapers
and soak them in the paste to make papier mache. Cover the balloon with the papier mache and allow
it to dry. You may now wish to paint a face on it.
- Firmly attach the papier mache covered balloon head to the top of the sticks
using string or twine
- ‘Dress’ the scarecrow with the old clothes
- Name the scarecrow if you wish and put him in the school grounds next to any
new plants or newly sewn seeds
